Strategic Asia 2010-11: Asia’s Rising Power and America’s Continued Purpose marks the tenth anniversary edition of NBR’s Strategic Asia series and takes stock of the Strategic Asia region by providing an integrated perspective on the major issues that influence stability in the region. In this volume, leading experts provide a continent-wide net assessment of the core trends and issues affecting the region and examine Asia’s performance in nine key functional areas.

The PLA at Home and Abroad: Assessing the Operational Capabilities of China's Military (June 2010) gathers findings from the 20th annual People's Liberation Army (PLA) Conference. In April, the Atlantic Council of the United States, the US-ASEAN Business Council, and NBR convened a moderated discussion on the practicalities of engaging Burma/Myanmar between two former U.S. Charges d'Affaires - Priscilla Clapp and the Honorable Kent Wiedemann.

NBR and the Thai Studies Program at Georgetown University hosted a workshop in April to examine the United States-Thailand Alliance. Participants gathered to examine American perspectives on the alliance as well as regional dynamics and their impact on the relationship. At the inaugural Asia Policy Assembly held in Washington, D.C., on June 17-18, NARP Research Associate David M. Lampton was awarded the Scalapino Prize in recognition of his exceptional contributions to America’s understanding of the vast changes underway in Asia. The award honors the legacy of Dr. Robert Scalapino, arguably the foremost scholar of Asia over the past sixty years.

In this June 2010 issue of the NBR Analysis David M. Lampton highlights four sources of mutual strategic mistrust that, if insufficiently attended to by Washington and Beijing, will metastasize in the U.S-China relationship. Lampton identifies ways in which the United States can manage and reduce tension in bilateral relations.
