Prior to being appointed as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Shalikashvili served as the Commander-in-Chief of all United States forces in Europe and as NATO’s tenth Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR).
After graduation from Bradley University in 1958, he was drafted as a private into the United States Army and, upon graduation form Officer Candidate School the following year, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Artillery. For the next 38 years he served in a variety of command and staff positions in the continental United States, Alaska, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Korea, Turkey, and Vietnam.
Today he is a visiting professor at Stanford University in the Center for International Security and Cooperation. He also serves on the board of directors of The Boeing Company, United Defense, L-3 Communications Corporation, the Frank Russell Trust Company, United, Inc., as well as the Atlantic Council and various military organizations.
