About General Shalikashvili |
| Leaving His Legacy |
- Thirty-nine years of military service to our nation, in which he defended the United States and promoted the country's ideals around the world, culminating in his service as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
- Providing wise counsel to the President of the United States and inspired leadership to the Armed Forces throughout his tenure as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
- Years of extraordinary leadership on the NBR Board of Directors, in which he has greatly strengthened the national security focus at NBR through his conviction, in the tradition of Senator Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson, that U.S. national security decision makers benefit enormously from having the assessments of the best civilian minds in the world.
- Also in the tradition of Senator Jackson, a record of bipartisanship and addressing critical issues, for example through Track II diplomacy between Beijing and Taiwan and efforts to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, undertaken with Drs. William Perry, Brent Scowcroft, Ashton Carter, and others.
- Serving as founding and current Senior Advisor to NBR's Strategic Asia Program, which publishes the leading annual assessment of the strategic environment in the Asia-Pacific and provides a path-breaking online database on the region.
- Leading NBR's first-ever board meeting (with extended discussions) at U.S. Pacific Command headquarters and conceiving the institution's first-ever overseas board meeting, in Beijing.
- And in myriad other ways assisting NBR as an institution so that it is better positioned to inform and strengthen policy throughout the Asia-Pacific.
