The John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is endowing the John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies to advance the study of national security issues and address critical United States interests in Asia. General Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is recognized for his thirty-nine years of military service to our nation and years of extraordinary leadership on the NBR Board of Directors. General Shalikashvili is also honored for his role as Senior Advisor to NBR's Strategic Asia Program. The Chair provides a distinguished scholar in the national security field with an opportunity to inform, strengthen, and shape the understanding of U.S. policymakers on critical current and long-term national security issues related to the Asia-Pacific.

The endowed Chair was dedicated formally at a black tie gala on April 5, 2006, which united the diplomatic, political, and corporate communities of the United States and the Asia-Pacific in support of General Shalikashvili. A one-day accompanying program, the Strategic Asia Forum, assessed the emerging strategic challenges and opportunities for the United States in the Asia-Pacific over the next five to ten years and provided a substantive component to the gala.
