Strategic Asia by the Numbers 2002-03

These pages contain tables and figures generated from the Strategic Asia database and its sources. These data have been organized in five sections: one for the major Asian powers, and four subsequent regional sections for Northeast Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Each section is divided into two double-page spreads. The first contains data indicative of underlying trends in the major countries within each region. Specific indicators include economic growth, balance of trade, demographic change, and military strength. The second spread features more recent data on economic output, inflation, defense priorities, and trade and investment flows, and contains forward-looking estimates. Together, these data reveal some significant changes underway in the strategic environment in Asia—the rapid rise of China as an economic and military power, the much more modest increase in India’s power and capabilities, Japan’s decade-long stagnation, and the relative decline of Russia.
