Evan A. Laksmana is currently a Political and Security Affairs Visiting Fellow at NBR. He is a senior researcher at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he coordinates the Military and the State research program. He is also a PhD candidate at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, where he was a Fulbright Presidential Scholar (2011-15). His research focuses on regional security, military change, civil-military relations, as well as defense and foreign policy in Southeast Asia.

He has held fellowships and research positions with the University of Sydney’s Southeast Asia Centre, the Lowy Institute for International Policy, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and Nanyang Technological University’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. He has taught at the Indonesian Defense University and his writings have appeared in Contemporary Southeast Asia, Asian Security, Security Challenges, Journal of the Indian Ocean Region, Harvard Asia Quarterly, Defence Studies, Journal of Strategic Studies, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Washington Post, The Jakarta Post, and others. He holds a MA in Political Science from Syracuse University, a MS in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, and a BA (Cum Laude) in Political Science from Parahyangan Catholic University, Indonesia.
