Roundtable: Japan and the Retreat of the American World Order

On December 5, 2017, the Kenneth B. and Anne H.H. Pyle Center for Northeast Asia Studies hosted a private roundtable discussion in Seattle attended by a select group of scholars, business leaders, diplomats, and military officers.

The discussion featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Kenneth Pyle based on his upcoming book Japan in the American Century. The presentation was followed by a discussion focused on the changing character of the U.S.-Japan alliance, the shifting balance of power in East Asia, and the challenges facing U.S. strategy in the Asia-Pacific.

At a 2012 Pyle Center Conference, Dr. Pyle discussed the state of the U.S.-Japan alliance and drew on the alliance's 60-year history to offer guidance on how the alliance might be strengthened going forward. Watch the video or read the transcript.
