On January 30, 2017, the Historical Committee of the Attorney General’s Office of Washington held a panel discussion entitled "The History of the Legal Battle to Protect Orcas in Washington." Senator Slade Gorton, who as attorney general led the 1976 legal battle, was a panelist at the event, which was filmed by TVW.

Senator Slade Gorton Recognized for Contributions to Japan-U.S. Relations

On January 19, 2016, the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle honored Slade Gorton for his many contributions to Japan-U.S. relations during his career as a U.S. Senator. In a ceremony held during the New Year’s Reception at the Official Residence, Senator Gorton was awarded the Consul General’s Commendation in recognition of his successful efforts to strengthen relations with Japan and foster connections across the Pacific.

Twenty-Five Years of U.S.-Japan Relations: Baseball, Bashing, and Bilateral Cooperation

At a seminar held at NBR’s offices in Seattle on May 12, 2016, Sasakawa USA and the National Bureau of Asian Research looked back on the past 25 years of the U.S.-Japan relationship with an emphasis on the unlikely role of the Seattle Mariners. Senator Gorton spoke at the seminar, which took place after events at the Mariners baseball stadium earlier in the day.

Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Celebration of Senator Slade Gorton Saving the Seattle Mariners

The 25th Anniversary Celebration of Senator Slade Gorton saving the Seattle Mariners was a fundraising event hosted by the Seattle Mariners to honor Senator Gorton, the Slade Gorton International Policy Center, and U.S.–Japan cooperation. The event took place on May 12, 2016, at Safeco Field.

Gorton Center Discussion Series: U.S.-China Environmental Engagement

On May 5, 2016, the Slade Gorton International Policy Center hosted a panel discussion on the rise, impact, and goals of environmental engagement between China and the United States, particularly in the state of Washington. In this policy discussion, various projects were discussed including lessons learned from the recently withdrawn application to build a methanol plant in Tacoma by Northwest Innovation Works, a China-backed company.

The 9/11 Conference

On September 9, 2011, the Slade Gorton International Policy Center at The National Bureau of Asian Research held "The 9/11 Conference: Security Solutions for the Next Ten Years" just days before the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The gathering brought together top leaders from policy, industry, and academe to assess today’s most pressing terrorism threats and to discuss solutions for a more secure world.
