NBR Welcomes Cynthia A. Watson to Board of Directors

Dr. Watson is professor and dean emerita at the National War College and has taught across the curriculum and served in academic leadership roles over her years at the college.
WASHINGTON, D.C. | Today, the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) announced that Cynthia A. Watson will join the NBR Board of Directors. Dr. Watson is professor and dean emerita at the National War College, which she joined in August 1992. She has taught across the curriculum and served in academic leadership roles over her years at the college. From March 2018 through July 2021, she served as dean of Faculty and Academic Programs, and she recently retired from the role of interim provost.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Watson, whose leadership experience and deep expertise on the Asia-Pacific will prove invaluable to mission success,” said John Rindlaub, chair of NBR’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Watson earned an MA from the London School of Economics and a PhD from the University of Notre Dame. She has served on the governing boards of a number of professional organizations and the editorial board of Third World Quarterly. She is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and the Society for Military History.
“I have worked closely with Dr. Watson on a range of issues, including the annual People’s Liberation Army Conference. Her expertise on the NBR board will be essential as we expand our PLA research and build out our PLA and other Executive Education programs, while also deepening our research on Southeast Asia policy questions at this critical moment in U.S.-Asia relations,” said NBR president Roy Kamphausen.
