Nicholas Eberstadt

Nicholas Eberstadt (PhD, Harvard University) is a member of the Board of Advisors at the National Bureau of Asian Research.

Dr. Eberstadt holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute. He is currently a Commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Key National Statistics, and previously has served on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics and the President’s Council on Bioethics. He is also a founding director of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea and a member of the board of academic advisors for the Korea Economic Institute of America. He researches and writes extensively on issues in demographics, development, and international security.

Dr. Eberstadt has authored chapters on the Koreas and demography in five volumes of NBR’s Strategic Asia series. He has written and edited several books and monographs in association with NBR, including Korea Approaches Unification (1995), Korea’s Future and the Great Powers (2000), and Russia’s Peacetime Demographic Crisis: Dimensions, Causes, Implications (2010). His many books and monographs include Poverty in China (1979), Foreign Aid and American Purpose (1988), and The End of North Korea (1999). Dr. Eberstadt has consulted for numerous governmental and international organizations, the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of State, USAID, and the World Bank, and on numerous occasions has been invited to offer expert testimony before Congress.
