A Breakfast Discussion with Ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt

On February 23, 2023, NBR president Roy Kamphausen, together with NBR’s Energy and Environmental Affairs team, held a breakfast conversation with Ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources. High-level stakeholders from the government, nonprofit, and private sectors engaged with Ambassador Pyatt on a myriad of issues around energy security and decarbonization targets, particularly amidst the energy crisis exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Throughout the discussion, participants stressed the need for upscaling nuclear energy use and increasing investments in carbon management through technologies like carbon capture and utilization. Attendees also raised questions around whether the U.S. government will align with other Quad member countries in including fossil fuel as part of the energy mix in the process of achieving a clean energy transition. Other discussion items included the potential of the United States to supply LNG to allies and partners in need, the key role of private sector leadership in the clean energy transition, and the need for a widescale rollout of renewable energy sources like solar, offshore wind, and hydrogen.
