"Strategic Observations from Recent Senior Taiwan Engagements" with RADM Mike Studeman
On April 10, 2024, NBR held its twenty-sixth President’s Circle dialogue with special guest RADM Mike Studeman (U.S. Navy, retired), former Indo-Pacific Director of Intelligence and Commander, Office of Naval Intelligence. Admiral Studeman is also a new member of NBR’s Board of Advisors. In this exclusive conversation following his recent trip to Taiwan at the invitation of the incoming Lai administration, Admiral Studeman shared his observations from high-level engagements and travel around the island, including to Kinmen.
Admiral Studeman offered insights into Taiwan’s military modernization and preparedness with a focus on the Taiwanese military’s hybrid forces, asymmetric capabilities, and overall defense strategies; China’s military expansion and potential threats to Taiwan; and potential U.S. policy options and opportunities for U.S.-Taiwan defense cooperation.
President’s Circle members and invited guests were invited to join this exclusive in-person discussion at NBR’s Washington, D.C., office followed by a private reception. President’s Circle members unable to join in-person had the opportunity to participate and interact in the discussion via teleconference. See a video excerpt of Admiral Studeman’s remarks below. A recording of this special pop-up discussion with Admiral Studeman was made available to current President’s Circle members.
