Asia Policy 14.4
October 2019

October 30, 2019 The National Bureau of Asian Research

This issue of Asia Policy features two roundtables: one on U.S.-Taiwan relations under the Taiwan Relations Act and one on Indonesia’s 2019 presidential election and its implications. Thailand also held national elections this year, and a special essay addresses what the process and results portend for democracy there. Articles examine how military reforms have enhanced China’s ability to more effectively challenge international and regional norms as well as the interplay between the European Union’s institutional diplomacy and French-led naval diplomacy in Europe’s Indo-Pacific strategy. A book review roundtable focuses on Nicholas R. Lardy’s The State Strikes Back: The End of Economic Reform in China?
