On April 18, 2017, a staff briefing on “Decoding the Trump-Xi Summit: Winners and Losers” was hosted by NBR and the US-China Business Council (USCBC) in conjunction with the Congressional U.S.-China Working Group.

The first U.S.-China summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping was described by both parties as positive and productive. While the summit yielded discussion about a new structure for high-level cooperation and a timetable for bilateral trade issues, those who had expected specific takeaways from Mar-a-Lago on trade, market access, and human rights will have to bide their time. Nevertheless, this first summit offers a window into how future, and perhaps thornier, exchanges may take place between the world’s leading economies during this critical juncture in U.S.-China relations. This briefing provided staffers with an overview of the summit and its implications for U.S. policy and the U.S. Congress on issues related to trade, business, security, and geopolitics.
