Middle Power Diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific Region

On July 12, 2011, NBR hosted a roundtable discussion in its Seattle office with Dr. Thomas Wilkins from the University of Sydney. Dr. Wilkins spoke and took questions on middle power diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific, examining how countries such as Australia and Canada have individually or collectively tackled key issues such as the rise of China, the relative decline of U.S. power, and the proliferation of traditional and non-traditional security threats.

The Roundtable Discussion was organized by NBR’s Next Generation Leadership in Asian Affairs Fellowship Program as part of the Leadership Forum, a professional development program for NBR staff, fellows, and interns designed to cultivate leadership through a curriculum of seminars and discussion forums. About the Speaker

Dr. Thomas Wilkins is Lecturer on Asia-Pacific security and strategic studies at the University of Sydney. Before joining the University of Sydney, Dr. Wilkins was a lecturer at the University of Salford and held post-doctoral fellowships at the University of San Francisco, the East-West Center, and the International Institute for Asian Studies. His recent publications include book chapters and journal articles on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the rise of China, and World War II military history in the Asia-Pacific.
