"Democracy and Human Rights in the Indo-Pacific" with Ambassador Julie Turner
On September 17, 2024, NBR held its twenty-seventh President’s Circle dialogue with special guest Ambassador Julie Turner, U.S. Special Envoy on North Korean Human Rights Issues at the U.S. Department of State.
NBR President Michael Wills began the event by giving his outlook on recent developments in Asia, including opportunities for the Unites States to work with new leaders in Bangladesh and Thailand. Afterwards, he engaged Ambassador Turner in a conversation on opportunities and challenges for the United States to advance North Korean human rights and support democratic institutions in the Indo-Pacific. Ambassador Turner explained the DPRK government’s oppression and censorship of its people; the challenges the United States faces in attempting to engage with the DPRK government; and how the United States seeks to increase partnerships with its allies and partners to find alternative ways to better promote democracy and human rights for the North Korean people.
