U.S.-ROK Technology Cooperation, Defense, and Security

On July 18, 2024, the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), with support from the Korea Foundation, hosted a congressional briefing for staff on the House Foreign Affairs Committee on U.S.-ROK Technology Cooperation, Defense, and Security. The briefing began with a panel discussion featuring two of NBR’s nonresident fellows, Nigel Cory and Darcie Draudt-Véjares, as they considered the current state of U.S.-ROK technology cooperation and examined how it fits into the broader U.S.-ROK security alliance and geopolitical landscape at large. In dialogue with attendees, the panel discussed how the United States and South Korea must balance and combat a range of threats from various actors in the region, while seeking to further technology cooperation in the areas of data policies and digital relations as both pertain to each country’s national security and economic interests.
