Nelson Dong

Nelson Dong is a member of the Board of Advisors at the National Bureau of Asian Research.
Mr. Dong was an Of Counsel in the Seattle office of Dorsey & Whitney LLP, where he represented technology companies and research institutions in domestic and international technology and intellectual property transactions. He has special expertise in U.S. export control and national security matters, domestic and international technology transfers and licensing, and outsourcing and manufacturing in Asia and was co-head of the firm’s National Security Practice Group.
Mr. Dong has taught and written about U.S. export control, economic sanctions, and other national security laws governing foreign investments in or acquisitions of U.S. technology companies; intellectual property law; technology-related international business transaction and strategic alliances; university-based technology transfer; academic entrepreneurship; and the financing and organization of high-technology businesses.
He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, has served on the Board of Directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and is a past president of both the White House Fellows Foundation and Association and the Washington State China Relations Council. He has served as a member of the President’s Export Council Subcommittee on Export Administration and been active in the American Bar Association’s Section of International Law and Practice. He has been president of the TechLaw Group and is a member of the Committee of 100.
Mr. Dong was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Boston (1980-82); Deputy Associate Attorney General, Department of Justice (1979-80); and White House Fellow and Special Assistant to U.S. Attorney General Griffin B. Bell, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. (1978-79).
He received his JD from Yale Law School and his AB from Stanford University.
