2023 Pacific Security Forum Photos


NBR President Roy Kamphausen welcomes everyone to the 2023 Pacific Security Forum.


NBR Board of Directors member Jonathan Roberts offers a welcome to Forum attendees on behalf of NBR’s Board of Directors.


The Morning Keynote Address was given be Congressman Adam Smith, Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, U.S. House of Representatives, who afterwards joined NBR President Roy Kamphausen for a conversation with Forum attendees.


NBR Executive Vice President Michael Wills moderates the first session of the day on Evolving Security Challenges in the Indo-Pacific. Panelists included Independent Consultant Elaine Bunn, Brigadier General Brian Davis (U.S. Army, retired), and Nadège Rolland, NBR Distinguished Fellow for China Studies.


NBR Co-founder, President Emeritus, and Counselor Richard J. Ellings joined the Forum to moderate the second session of the day on Navigating Shifts in the Indo-Pacific Geoeconomic Order. Panelists included NBR Counselor Aaron Friedberg, NBR Advisor Ulrike Schaede, and NBR Executive Vice President Michael Wills.


As part of the Forum, NBR President Roy Kamphausen offered a recognition of U.S. armed forces units in Washington state and welcomed Rear Admiral Mark Sucato, Commander of Navy Region Northwest, to the Forum. Navy Region Northwest is the U.S. Navy’s third-largest fleet concentration in the world.


NBR Advisor Lieutenant General Stephen Raymond Lanza (U.S. Army, retired) introduces Luncheon Keynote Speaker Lieutenant General Xavier T. Brunson, Commanding General, I Corps and Joint Base Lewis-McChord before a fireside chat with NBR President Roy Kamphausen.


NBR Advisor Ambassador Tariq A. Karim answers a question from Nadège Rolland, NBR Distinguished Fellow for China Studies, who moderated the third session of the day on Regional Perceptions of Escalating U.S.-China Competition. They are joined on stage by Director General Daniel K.C. Chen, Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office and Consul General Makoto Iyori, Consulate-General of Japan.


The fourth session of the day focused on Multilateralism and the Indo-Pacific Security Environment and included as moderator NBR Board of Directors member Rear Admiral Huan Nguyen (U.S. Navy, retired) and panelists Consul General Eun-ji Seo, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea and NBR Vice President of Research Alison Szalwinski.


For the Afternoon Keynote Address, NBR Vice President of Research Alison Szalwinski introduces NBR’s John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert (U.S. Navy, retired) who moderated a discussion with Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
